Brian  Explains All At Placebo's Videoshoot for The Bitter End

So how’s it going?

Well it was a very early day as we got up at 6am which is ungodly cause I don’t like getting up when it’s still dark.  We’re use to going to bed at 6am rather than getting up but it’s been very energetic so far and very sweaty.  There’s been some pyrotechnics going on and so we have been filling our lungs with sulphur unfortunately.  We would rather fill our lungs with tobacco (holding up a half-smoked cigarette).  It’s been a breeze really including the wind machines and it’s always great working with Howard. This is the fifth video that we’ve done with him as well and so I guess we trust each other enough to just get on with it. We don’t really ask him that many questions so we just had the concept and kind of just went for it.

So you enjoy making videos then?

It’s good to get back to doing this kind of video cause we stopped making performance videos for a while and wanted to make small films.  But the track is so energetic and punky so it just suited this kind of video.

‘Nancy Boy’ was the first video that you did with Howard but do you remember your impression of him when you met him for the first time?

He was very smooth,  very relaxed, unpretentious and just a nice chap really.

Can you tell us a little bit about how the video ties in with the single ‘Bitter End’?

Absolutely no idea. Sometimes it’s good if it does and sometimes it’s good if it doesn’t cause it’s not really that important in a performance context.  We are all placed in life threatening situations in the video  but thankfully that’s all going to be done by computers.

So you wouldn’t have fancied climbing up onto the satellite dish then?

It would have been nice in the summertime but it’s January so not really.  I think the aesthetic would have ended up looking like ‘New Year’s Day’ by U2 where we’re all wrapped up in scarves, big heavy trench coats and mittens if that was the case.  It’s probably safer indoors!  Look my stylist is shaking his head and saying no way. (Laughter)

Is the single typical of the album would you say?

No way but I don’t think there are any singles on the album that are typical of the album in general. It’s quite varied and it covers a lot of ground and this one is very immediate and very fast.  It’s one of the faster tracks on the album and it was written in a day.  We had been playing around with a lot of electronics and we just fancied doing something very basic again so that’ where that came from.  It just came from immediacy really hence the sweat.
