Wake up! It's the Sleepy Jackson interview on The Raft!
J: Whats it like going from playing small gigs like the Barfly, to the Astoria in such a short time?
L: Yeah, it was a bit of a shocker that so many people went to see our band. It was great. Good experience.
J: The place was rammed, why do you think so many people went to see you?
L: Ahh, it was a bit mad having just gone from playing the Barfly a couple of months ago, but I guess its a good record (debut album Lovers) and theres so much crap music out there...when people start liking good music, its like theres something wrong you know.
J: How did you feel about the whole doing a big show thing?
L: I thought people were a little timid, like they needed a few more chardonnays. With smaller venues its easier to rouse the crowd up...but weve done so many gigs now, you just go out there and play the music as well as you can.
J: Do you feel like youre in a whirlwind?
L: Yeah, definitely. Its funny, because weve been on the road for so many years now, its like youre on a merry-go-round, and you just go round and round.
J: Do you get time to sit down and reflect and write songs?
L: No, never. Thats whats exciting about the years before the band gets into a busy schedule. Thats like your apprenticeship time; you have so many hours of the day and we spent a lot of time rehearsing and writing. Now when we write on the road, it can be really quick as were so used to doing it together, but its like, you know, a rolling stone gathers no moss, kind of thing. Its hard, but I dont want to whinge about it. If I was back in Perth Id just get depressed. Things are moving on.
J: What does it feel like when you come off stage?
L: It feels so good. The best feeling in the world is before you go on, and after you come off. I feel so refreshed, and like youve come out of a Scientology class or something; then it decreases the more intoxicated you get!
