Gomez Say What?
Does it feel like youve come full circle with this album?
Olly: Yeah I think thats a great way to describe it...I think youve done well there
Tom: Yeah...its back to just being a band playing...weve got rid of a little bit of the more experimental side. Its still stylistically all over the place, but its a much rawer record.
Where was the pressure coming from to change?
Ben: There was no pressure...every record weve done has just sounded different...
Tom: ...There are big differences in the albums but yknow, its always us singing and you can never change that much. The thing is, after the last record which was a sound record, it was nice to make a record thats just about songs again.
I read somewhere that you made the first record drunk! Did you drink heavily whilst you recorded this one?
Ben: No not at all really, I think was the soberest record weve made! Cos weve got our own studio now down in Brighton, so we tend to drive down there...
Tom: We tend to play quite slowly when were pissed, whereas this records like the amphetamine record!
Was the idea to make it quite urgent from the start?
Tom: Yeah...to suck you in fast, and the songs are all short, you got three songs under three minutes as soon as you put it on. The ordering of the album is really good I think.
Did you take a long time to think about that?
Olly: Yeah, the first time we did it, it was just too heavy...ykow, I was like I cant handle this, it just pinned you back. So we were like lets put a softer tune in there just for five minutes, and once wed done that everything just sort of slotted in.
Tom: Originally we wanted to make a 45 minute album, but it was too heavy, so we put a few of the mid-tempo tunes back in there to give the listener a bit of respite. 13 songs in fifteen minutes...double album on vinyl.
