The Best Gigs......Ever!
TimeOut magazine has just conducted a poll asking you to name your best gig ever. The response created their top 100 gigs of all time, spanning 11 decades of nostalgic (some may argue prehistoric) flashbacks. This is when you went, saw and felt you had conquered having been shaken to your core by your favourite artists.
From 'Original Dixieland' in 1919, to 'N.E.R.D' in 2003 (hitting the #6 spot!) being joined by one Justin Timberlake showing N.E.R.D could do pop and he could do black.
This is the ultimate flashback guide to those performances that have been burned into your memory but also etched into the annals of 'Those shows that trully rocked'. Don't worry, all the greats are in there including The Beatles at #10 (Pigalle, Picaddilly 1963) and The Rolling Stones at #4 (rolling through the Crawdaddy Club in Surrey 1963).
The results aren't ultimately surprising but this is one man's view.
The majority of these gigs occurred when I was nothing but a twinkle in my father's eye, yet my continual thirst for engaging gigs and raw music draws me to them. I wish I could have seen The Clash live. I really wish I could have watched Mr Hendrix as he set his guitar on fire, although he was bottom of the bill (yes that's right, he was supporting Engelbert Humperdinck!!!).
And how I wish I could have seen Hip-Hop land in Blighty when Grandmaster Flash played The Venue and scrambled the audience's cerebral cornflakes as he scratched with his elbows and feet. "I say, that chap seems to be cleaning his steroegram with his shoes!"- But it wasn't so.
My experiences rise to the heights of 'The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' playing Hyde Park and getting flashbacks to berating someone for buying me 'this g'dam CD' titled "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik". At the time (1991) the title held only two things I was familiar with (one of them I knew was in my body the other went in my coco). Nevertheless...An absolute behemoth of a gig.
Here at The Raft, the choices are varied with some common traces of familiarity. We are still undecided about the top ten but here are some of our favs: Mr Elliot, our resident evil says 'Tool' at Brixton 2002. Josh our very own wise one has a few; namely James Brown's band in 1993 and another choice, intersecting with wizkid Eamonn, who both give props to Queens of The Stone Age at Brixton Academy 2003, a gig I missed due to nothing but stupidity amalgamated with extreme laziness. David Edwards reckons Kylie's 1998 Shepherd's gig bushed tickled his fancy. (If I was there I think I would have to agree...)
But what do YOU think?
We want to hear your top 5 gigs and you will win a prize suitable for...well someone that enters this comp to win 10 awesome live albums. All ten can be yours. All you have to do is enter....
