Led by legendary Australian music executive Chris Murphy, the man who drove INXS to mega-stardom and sales of more than 30 million albums, the mission of Petrol Records has been simple from the beginning: To release meticulously styled and sequenced albums featuring some of the planet’s most culturally diverse sounds. In other words, Petrol Records aims to provide seriously good music.
Founded in 2001, the genesis of Petrol Records came from Murphy’s own travels around the world which inspired him to make and distribute timeless albums that would lead listeners beyond the boundaries of their lounge chairs, unveiling the hidden gems of global music, accessible for everyone to discover.
The label has already been at the forefront of some of the hottest new music trends and genres in the market today, including Reggaeton, and the Petrol catalog has already received unprecedented international success through Apple iTunes storefronts worldwide with more than 141 #1 iTunes chart positions, 600 Top Ten iTunes chart positions and more than 1,585 Top 20 iTunes chart positions to date.
Petrol Records is continuing to develop products to build upon its collection of cool, funky, sleek, contemporary, sassy and diverse sounds, and in February 2006, signed an exclusive partnership with EMI Music to license Petrol’s repertoire and provide sales, marketing and distribution support for physical and digital releases on a global basis. Under the terms of the agreement, the companies will share in revenues from new compilations, new Petrol-signed artists, DVDs, synchronization and the existing Petrol catalog.
