EMAs 2005: And The Winners Are...
Coldplay, Gorillaz and Robbie lead the way!
Performing at the televised ceremony in Lisbon on November 3rd were Coldplay, who with Gorillaz led the nominations and were joined on stage by the Foo Fighters, Green Day, Robbie Williams and The Black Eyed Peas.
Coldplay, who reached a worldwide number one position in 2005 with their new "X&Y" album, competed for Best Group, Song, Album, Rock and UK and Ireland act.
Gorillaz also garnered five nominations; Best Group, Best Song, Best Pop and Best UK and Ireland Act.
Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s creations pulled off a double whammy. Not only did the animated band put on a breathtaking live show of smash single 'Feel Good Inc.' fusing 3-D animation and real-life performances from De La Soul, but they also scooped the coveted Best Group award.
De La Soul and Jamie Hewlett stepped up to collect the last award of the night, and a slightly bemused Hewlett commented: “We’re the best group, and we don’t even exist!” "It is great to have a group that thinks outside of the box and willing to push the limits and not allow rules to set standards on how they should make music" said De La Soul.
Murdoc, 2D, Russel and Noodle beat off competition from U2, Coldplay and Green Day to pick up the desirable trophy.
While the band were on stage at the EMAs, the music collaborators behind Gorillaz were performing live in Manchester as part of their five night residency at the city's Opera House. The Daily Telegraph described the live show as "in a word, extraordinary" and The Daily Star thinks "…a jaw-dropping triumph".
Others leaving Lisbon with big smiles on their famous faces are Robbie Williams who picked up Best Male. Never one for shy performances, Robbie was in great form as he belted out 'Tripping' with loads of running around and he also mangaged this year's first and only stage dive! He barely made it back on stage, with fans practically tearing the clothes from his back. Good on you, Rob.
