Olivier Bernet’s Composition
The stunning Persepolis OST is out now
The film Persepolis won the Jury Prize Award in Cannes 2007 and is nominated for Best Animated Picture at this year’s Oscar Academy Awards.
Composed by Olivier Bernet, the music for Persepolis is the perfect counterpoint to Marjane Satrapi’s books. All the dialogues which hit home in the film are there, as well as heady instrumental pieces.
The songs presented here vary from Iranian disco music and discreet piano ballads to orchestrations that are slightly oriental or in the style of Serge Gainsbourg. As for the words, they accurately recreate the film’s melancholy and bite.
The offbeat version of Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger, sung by Chiara Mastroianni, is the album’s high point and conveys an instant charm.
This young Iranian illustrator, is a phenomenon in more ways than one. As a child Marjane Satrapi lived through the 1979 Revolution and its aftermath.
Then as an immigrant in Austria, she managed to combine clear analysis with a fierce sense of humour to describe her life and that of her country in four graphic novels, which altogether have sold over one million copies across the world.
