BRMC - Oxford Zodiac Jan 2002
To see it in these circumstances and surroundings - bearing in mind these guys have 'graced' (if that's what they call it) the NME cover before setting foot in the country - can do nothing than provoke a reaction from the quizzical audience. The looks on their faces betray the feeling that they can't wait to tell their mates (and I couldn't!) that they've seen something just a little bit special in these cynical times. It's like seeing the first glances between two future lovers.
By the time this is published, they will have played a tour of Britain (with the this-joke-isn't-funny-anymore Andrew WK, for fucks sake, headlining) and supported Oasis at the Albert Hall. Albums will be flying out of shops. All to come of course, but to see them in these surroundings with no hype, identity even, makes it feel even better. Yeah, I can say I was there. But it's simpler than that. I saw a great band, a great trio of musicians, performing uplifting yet dirty-assed rock songs in a tight little club. And sometimes, isn't that just one of the best fuckin sights and sounds in the world?
