Tonight Essex, Tomorrow the World

The Music - Colchester Arts Centre

Everyone here tonight knows they're witnessing something special. Like Oasis in 94, or the Stone Roses in 89. The Music are young, couldn't give a toss about who they sound like, what they're supposed to look like, or how they're expected to act. It's not arrogance, and there's no 'we're the greatest band in the world' moves, it's confidence that comes from knowing you've written some of the best songs in years. They come on to a Keanu Reeves speech from The Matrix, kick it to The Dance, and go on to prove why they're the most exciting band in the country. There've been a load of bands who've come through with nice sensitive songs that grow on you until you love them (Badly Drawn Boy, Doves, Haven, whoever) but songs like Take The Long Road And Walk It instantly get tonight's crowd going apeshit with adrenalin rushes. Walls Get Smaller and The People are psychedelic rock at it's best and it's pure excitement from the off, music you feel rather than listen to. Songs you have to dance to rather than sway and hold yer bird's hand to. Adam Nutter gets some stunning sounds out of his guitar and could be the musician John Squire was always threatening to be, whilst singer Robert Harvey dances like an excitable teenager who's just found himself fronting a band good enough to have Oasis support them. Tonight they conquer Essex, tomorrow it's the rest of the world.
